New 355HP Mercedes Benz A 45 AMG Bows at the Geneva Motor Show

Mercedes-Benz is not exactly renowned for its hot hatches; in fact, it has been absent from this segment since… well, forever. Now that the third-gen A-Class is a proper B-Segment hatchback instead of a mini MPV like its predecessors, the three-pointed star decided it wanted to play.

Actually, dominate would be a more appropriate word. The A 45 AMG that made its world debut at the 2013 Geneva Motor Show today is powered by a turbocharged four-cylinder that, despite having a capacity of just 1,991 cc, boasts a Porsche (never mind VW, Ford and the other GTis) scaring 355HP (360PS) and 450 Nm (332 lb-ft).

The A 45 AMG is fitted with the AMG SPEEDSHIFT dual-clutch seven-speed transmission, the AMG 4MATIC all-wheel drive system and a three-stage ESP. It accelerates from 0-100 km/h (0-62 mph) in just 4.6 seconds and reaches an electronically restricted top speed of 250 km/h (155 mph).

"With the new A 45 AMG we have well and truly achieved our aim of developing the most dynamic, powerful and efficient four-cylinder series production car", said Tobias Moers, Head of Overall Vehicle Development and Board Member of Mercedes-AMG GmbH. “With its impressive high-tech package and the performance-oriented AMG 4MATIC all-wheel drive, the A 45 AMG is a thoroughbred AMG through and through."

According to the company, the A 45 AMG leads the pack in efficiency, too, as it posts an average consumption of 6.9 lt/100 km (34.1 mpg US) and emits 161-165 g of CO2/km, complying with the EU6 emission standards that will come into effect in 2015.

Mercedes-Benz announced that the release date for the A 45 AMG will be April 8 and its market launch in Germany will commence in June.

The most unreliable car would be powered by an MG TF engine, ride on the suspension of a BMW M3, and have the electric workings of the Renault Megane, the air-conditioning system of a Seat Alhambra, the heating system of a Seat Toledo, the ignition of a Mercedes V-Class, the steering system of a Volvo C70, the gearbox of a Land Rover Freelander and the brakes of an Audi A8.
Commenting on the results, Warranty Direct managing director, Duncan McClure Fisher, said: “The Monster Mk1 represents the worst-performing vehicles in every sector, from suspension to electrics, on our roads today. The wide range of cars included in our special blend highlights how mostly reliable cars can be dragged down by one problem part.”
According to the British company, nearly 40 percent of BMW M3s require repairs to axle and suspension components alone each year, while the same percentage of Renault Meganes report an electrical fault on an basis.
Furthermore, one in five Land Rover Freelanders suffer transmission glitches each year and the same number of Audi A8s will need repairs to their brakes.
The company also found that almost a fourth of MG’s TF sports car owners will experience engine troubles, while more than one in eight SEAT Alhambra MPVs will need their air-con fixed during a typical year.

It is a little weird that Mercedes released a few official pictures of the upcoming CLA on a Sunday night, and the night before Christmas Eve. Still it seems these are the real deal (at least for now i am going to consider them official).

The car, as expected, is very similar to the A-Class both outside and inside, with the obvious exception of the rear section, which follows the lines used by the CLS but in a smaller package, with 4,60m, 30cm longer than the A-Class.

Almost a week ago Mercedes revealed the engine options, you can read that here. To sum it up we have four engines, three petrol and one diesel, with a power output between 122hp to 211hp for the petrol engine and 177hp for the diesel. Later in the year, and in 2014, more engine options will be made available together with the AMG version, with a turbocharged 2.0liter engine (M133) developing 354hp (260 kW) connected to a new 7G-DCT dual clutch transmission.

But for now we have a few pictures of the CLA with the AMG exterior kit, which looks pretty good, even if it full of special effects.

Though it only existed for four short years, Group B racing has continued to captivate fans of all ages.
